Events of the 1960's and Kennedy's influence
1961- Peace Corps- Recruited young American volunteers to give technical aid to developing countries.
1961- Alliance for Progress-Promoted land reform and economic development in Latin America.
1961- Bay of Pigs Invasion- Kennedy approved a scheme to send US CIA forces into Cuba and use Cuban Exiles to overthrow Fidel Castro's regime in Cuba. The Bay of Pigs invasion failed to do what it was meant to do and cause an uproar. Castro used this invasion to gain more power by getting more aid from the Soviet Union.
1961- Berlin Wall- East Germans built a wall around West Berlin to stop East Germans from fleeing to West Germany. It was torn down in 1989 by rebellious East Germans.
1962-Trade Expansion act- Authorized reduced tariffs with the European Economic Community.
1962- Cuban missile crisis- U.S. spy plane took picture of nuclear missile sites in Cuba. Kennedy put a naval blockade around Cuba to stop them from obtaining more military supplies. He demanded that the soviets remove missiles and destroy the sites. The Soviets agreed as long as the U.S. didn't invade Cuba.
1964-Food Stamp Act- Helped poor people buy food
1965- National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities- Provided federal funding for creative and scholarly art projects
1965- Medicare- Health insurance for all people 65 and older
1965-Medicaid-Funds to states to pay for medical care for the poor and disabled.
1965-Elementary and Secondary Education Act- Federal funds to poor school districts. Funds for special education programs, and funds to expand Head Start, an early childhood education program.
1965- Higher Education Act- Federal Scholarships for post-secondary education.
1965- Immigration Act- Abolished discriminatory quotas based on national origins.
1966- Child Nutrition Act- Added breakfasts to the school lunch program
1966- Minimum Wage Increase- Federal minimum wage increased from $1.25 to $1.60 by 1968.
1968- Lyndon Johnson announces that he will not be running for another presidential term
1968- House Discrimination Act- Open Housing Act signed to prevent discrimination in the sale or rental of most private housing and apartments
1968- Protests at Columbia University- Students of Columbia University seized several buildings to protest their schools participation in Defense Analysis. Also, the University planned to build a gym over a park that was placed in a black community. Students were eventually moved from campus after violence with police.
1968- Low Income Housing Bill- allowed the allocation of $5 billion dollars to help meet the housing needs of low-income families. Financed the building of 1.7 million units of housing and provided subsidized living.
1968- Chicago DNC Convention protests- Protesters gathered at the Democratic National Convention to protest the Vietnam war with violent confrontations.
1968- Nixon wins election of 1968- defeats Hubert Humphrey. George Wallace received one electoral vote.
1969- Tet Offensive- Viet Cong and Northern Vietnamese forces launch an attack on Southern Vietnam
1969- Curt Flood Sues MLB- Curt Flood, a St. Louis Cardinal central fielder, was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies which caused Flood to sue because he believed in a reverse clause in a players' contract bonded them to a club for life. This therefore violated the 13th amendment and antitrust laws.
1969- Days of Rage- Hundreds of protesters damaged Chicago storefronts, public, and private property in an attempt to demonstrate how much they wanted the Vietnam War to end. They also protested the social injustices during those three days.
